Chest Medicine Department

Our department started on 1930 as a ward for treatment of Tuberculosis in general medicine department.
In 1940, a separate department consisting of 4 wards (120 beds) was established for treatment of tuberculosis and non-tuberculous pulmonary diseases. Our department is considered the pioneer department in pulmonary medicine in Egypt. The main line of treatment of tuberculosis at that time (1930-1950), before the era of Anti-TB drugs was collapse therapy (artificial pneumothorax and pneumoperitonium) which were done daily and successfully.
